Opening Night at Riverwalk – “The Best You Can”
Thursday, September 18, 2025
There’s nothing like the energy of opening night at Breck Film Festival! And this year we’re kicking things off with a special event.
Two-time Oscar nominee Judd Hirsch will join us in person for the premiere of “The Best You Can,” a smart romantic comedy that reunites Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick on screen for the first time in 20 years.
Hirsch, loved for his Emmy-winning role in “Taxi” and recent Oscar nomination for “The Fabelmans,” plays a supporting role in this witty exploration of age, relationships, and second chances.
The film follows Cynthia Rand (Sedgwick), a buttoned-up New Yorker married to a professor 25 years her senior, whose world gets turned upside down by the arrival of an underachieving security guard (Bacon).
We’re excited to have Hirsch in attendance, and he’s guaranteed to turn this film screening into an event in itself! You won’t want to miss a special chance to catch the film with one of the stars in your midst.
Doors open at 6:30 PM, and passholders should arrive early for the best seats. Trust us – opening night at The Riverwalk Center sells out fast, and you won’t want to miss the festival’s kickoff celebration!
Friday Spotlight – “Rebuilding”
Friday, September 19, 2025
Sometimes a film comes along that speaks directly to the resilience of the human spirit, and “Rebuilding” is exactly that kind of story.
This powerful drama from director Max Walker-Silverman (“A Love Song”) brings Colorado to the big screen in a personal way.
Josh O’Connor stars as Dusty, a divorced rancher who loses everything when a wildfire destroys his family farm. Now living in a trailer on a government campsite, he rebuilds his life while reconnecting with his ex-wife (Meghann Fahy) and young daughter.
Filmed against the backdrop of southern Colorado, the film turns a story of loss into one of hope and human connection.
What makes “Rebuilding” a perfect fit for our festival is how it captures the Colorado experience with authenticity and grace. This isn’t just a film set in Colorado – it’s a film that knows Colorado, from the devastating reality of wildfires to the strength of communities that come together in crisis.
The film has already garnered attention from Bleecker Street for distribution, suggesting you’re seeing something special before it reaches wider audiences. You won’t want to miss it!
Adventure Reel with Kai Jones and Todd Jones at Breckenridge’s Riverwalk Center
Saturday, September 20, 2025
Saturday night brings adrenaline to The Riverwalk Center with our Adventure Reel. This year, we’re featuring two films that display the thrill and artistry of mountain sports.
We’re excited to welcome special guests Kai Jones and Todd Jones to the showing of their own harrowing movie as part of our Film Fest experience.
Both will be joining us for a showing of “Kai Jones’ Falling into Place,” their documentary that follows Kai – a professional freeskier – through a journey of survival and recovery after shattering both legs in a cliff fall.
Directed by his father Todd Jones, co-founder of Teton Gravity Research, the film goes beyond a typical action sports movie to explore themes of resilience and family, as well as the mental fortitude required to overcome life-threatening adversity.
Paired with this is “Moving Line,” a fascinating historical adventure that tells the story of the first ski-crossing of Colorado.
Three amateur skiers from Boulder set out to map what would become the Colorado Trail, but discovered something bigger along the way – their passion for art and creative expression.
Having both Kai and Todd Jones present creates an incredible opportunity to hear firsthand about the unique dynamic of a father documenting his son’s most challenging moments.
Anniversary Screening – “Best in Show”
Sunday, September 21, 2025
You know we can’t close out the festival without a celebration!
In honor of Breck Film’s 45th anniversary, we’re going to be screening Christopher Guest’s comedy masterpiece “Best in Show.”
If you haven’t seen it (we’re not sure how!), this mockumentary follows eccentric dog owners competing at a prestigious dog show. The film remains one of the funniest ever made, and tackles themes across the spectrum – including the obsession and passion that many will go through to achieve glory!
Why did we pick “Best in Show” for our anniversary? Because it captures what we love about film – the ability to find humor and humanity in unexpected places. Twenty-five years after its release, the film’s satire feels as fresh and relevant as ever.
After four days of diverse experiences and film showings, we love to wrap up our time together by sharing a few laughs. It’s a reminder that movies, at their best, bring us together.
