FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE
In the high peaks of Afghanistan, young athletes from rival villages build makeshift wooden skis and convene for a mountain race that unites the community in a moment of peace and triumph just before their country’s collapse. Champions of the Golden Valley merges the triumphant spirit of a classic underdog sports story with the heartfelt portrait of a community finding hope amid disrupted dreams. Revealing a stunning unseen side of Afghanistan, it is an uplifting exploration of what it means to be a champion – in all its forms.
Join us for $1-off drinks during Happy Hour (6pm) with the film starting at 7pm! Blue Members and above get in free and will be sent their discount codes via email (if you believe you should have received a code but did not, please email dan@breckfilm.org).
Programmer’s Note: When Champions of the Golden Valley premiered, it felt like a no-brainer to bring to Breckenridge. A richly told true story that weaves together community, activism, and skiing is the kind of film we look for all year long. The documentary subjects are not so different from our ski-obsessed neighbors, but their struggles in Afghanistan bring a resilient and unlikely community to light. Champions of the Golden Valley will break your heart and glue it back together again – and really make you want to go skiing. (Cait McCluskie, Programming & Operations Director)
