2026 Colorado Film Festivals 101

Have you noticed Colorado’s film scene buzzing with more energy than usual lately?

Many of the established festivals are hitting big milestone anniversaries, and there have been a few major shake-ups. The Centennial State is quickly becoming a must-visit destination for film lovers.

And yes, we’re talking about that news – Sundance is coming to Boulder!

We like to say we’re Breck’s neighborhood film enthusiasts here at Breck Film, and we couldn’t be more excited about what the next year has in store for Colorado’s creative community.

Whether you’re looking to add a few film festivals to your calendar or perhaps looking to get involved yourself, here’s your guide to what’s happening in and around Colorado in 2026.

2027 Brings Sundance to the Rockies

Let’s address the elephant in the room – after more than 40 years in Park City, the Sundance Film Festival announced in March 2025 that it’s packing up and heading to Boulder starting in 2027.

It’s pretty incredible that Boulder beat out other big cities such as Cincinnati and Salt Lake City for one of the most important film festivals in the US.

So what does this mean for film lovers? Starting in 2027, you’ll be able to experience the world’s premier independent film festival just 45 minutes from Denver International Airport.

For those of us already embedded in Colorado’s film community, it validates what we’ve known all along – our state really does offer something special when it comes to cinema.

Colorado’s 2026 Film Festival Circuit

Denver Film Festival (October 22 – November 1, 2026)

As one of the first film festivals in the country, Denver Film Festival has been on the film festival calendar since 1978.

Now approaching its 49th year, DFF has grown into a massive celebration attracting over 40,000 attendees.

We love DFF because of its commitment to diversity – not just in programming but in perspective. At this fest, you’ll find a little bit of everything: thought-provoking documentaries, innovative narratives, and international films.

Breckenridge Film Festival (September 17-20, 2026)

Okay, okay… we might be a bit biased, but we think our annual festival offers something truly unique.

Breck Film Festival has earned a reputation as the “filmmaker’s festival.” We pride ourselves on creating an incredible week of connections between artists and audiences. And the setting couldn’t be better!

We’re coming off a fantastic film fest in 2025, and we’ve already been hard at work planning for next year – slated for Sept 17-20, 2026.

Because where else can you catch a morning screening, hike through golden aspens at lunch, and return for an evening premiere followed by chats with filmmakers at a local brewpub?

Boulder International Film Festival (April 9-12, 2026)

Another key festival in Colorado, BIFF has been steadily building its reputation as one of the most innovative festivals in the U.S.

And with Sundance’s impending arrival, all eyes are now on Boulder. The festival attracts enthusiastic audiences eager to discover everything from groundbreaking indies to projects by A-list filmmakers.

What sets BIFF apart is its deep community connection and its ability to attract major industry players. With Boulder emerging as a film hub, BIFF is perfectly positioned to complement Sundance’s winter presence.

Durango Independent Film Festival (March 4-8, 2026)

Down in the southwest corner of the state, DIFF celebrates its 21st birthday in 2026 with its trademark warmth and inclusivity.

DIFF has become known for welcoming all genres – from adventure films to Native stories. You’ll definitely find something to inspire you among the films that will screen in Durango.

The Future is Bright for Film in Colorado

We’re incredibly excited that Sundance is joining our ranks. And with the established Colorado festivals continuing to grow and innovate, Colorado is positioning itself as a major player in the independent film world.

But what excites us most isn’t the prestige – it’s the opportunity to build an even stronger community of storytellers and film lovers.

Here at Breck Film, we’re thrilled to be part of this expanding film culture. As we prepare for our 2026 festival, we’re reminded that great cinema isn’t just about what’s on screen – it’s about the conversations, connections, and community that films create.

Mark your calendars, plan your trips, and get ready to experience the best of independent cinema in Colorado!
