You made the film. You spent months — maybe years — getting the story right. It’s a passion project, and now it’s finally done!
But now it’s sitting on a hard drive. Meanwhile, you scroll through film festival submission pages, wondering if submitting your film might be worth the effort.
Here’s the thing: it is. Especially when you find the right festival — one that actually shows up for filmmakers.
The film festival circuit can feel intimidating and uncertain, especially when you’re putting something so personal out for the world to see.
But it doesn’t have to be! And skipping it altogether means missing out on something that a streaming release or online premiere can’t replicate – a room full of people who came specifically to watch your film and talk to you about it after.
Still not sure? Here’s why you should submit your film to a local film festival – and why the Breck Film Festival is a great place to start!
Submissions for the 2026 Breckenridge Film Festival are open now — regular deadline April 13, 2026. Submit Now!
Your Film Deserves a Real Audience
There’s a version of “getting your film out there” that means uploading it somewhere and hoping the algorithm finds it a few thousand views.
And sure – that’s not nothing. It’s worked great for many filmmakers out there over the years.
But it’s not the same as a curated screening in front of an audience that’s invested in independent film.
Film festival audiences are different. At festivals, moveigoers showed up on purpose. They bought tickets, planned their weekend around it, and likely traveled specifically to see work like yours.
When a film lands in that room, it has a chance to do what it was actually made to do.
Local and regional festivals are special in that they tend to offer something the big-name festivals often don’t: access.
At these festivals, you’re not just a name in a program. You’re a filmmaker who can walk into a Q&A, meet the audience, and connect with fellow filmmakers who are in the same place you are in their careers.
The Fear of Submitting Is Normal — And It’s Worth Pushing Through
Almost every filmmaker we’ve ever talked to feels some hesitation before they take the step.
What if it doesn’t get in? What if I spend the entry fee and hear nothing? What if my work isn’t ready for this?
Those feelings are real, but here’s some perspective: the Breckenridge Film Festival selects around 75 projects from roughly 550 submissions each year.
That’s a 14% acceptance rate — which means it’s competitive, but also means that filmmakers who are serious about their work get in.
The Breck Film Festival is highly curated, not arbitrary. If your film is good and it fits the spirit of what Breck Film programs, it has a genuine shot at succcess.
And even the process of submitting — choosing your category, putting together your press kit, committing to a deadline — is part of treating your work seriously. And you’ll be thankful that you went through the process, no matter the outcome.
So, don’t let your doubts hold you back. Your work may not be perfect yet, but that’s okay!
What to Expect When You Submit
If you’ve never submitted to a festival before, here’s what the process looks like at the Breckenridge Film Festival. This can give you an idea of what to expect as you submit to more festivals over time.
For the Breck Film Festival, everything goes through FilmFreeway. It’s the industry-standard platform for festival submissions.
You’ll create a project page, upload your screener, fill in your credits and synopsis, select your category, and pay the submission fee.
The whole process takes less than an hour if your materials are ready.
The 2026 festival accepts films across ten categories — Drama, Comedy, Documentary, Short Drama, Short Comedy, Short Documentary, Human Spirit, Adventure/Outdoors, Animation, and High School Films.
That’s a lot of categories – so whether you made a feature-length doc or a 15-minute short, there’s a home for it here!
Fees vary by deadline tier and category (features run $60–$80 at regular-to-extended; shorts run $50–$70). Student rates are available.
This means that the earlier you submit, the less it costs. And if you’re on the fence, the extended deadline in May gives you plenty of runway.
If your film is selected, you’ll be notified by June 24th. From there, the Breck Film team walks you through everything: technical delivery specs, press kit requirements, and what to expect on-site.
Each filmmaker team gets an assigned liaison at the festival, which makes the whole experience feel less like logistics and more like being genuinely welcomed.
Why Submit Your Film to the Breck Film Festival?
There are hundreds of film festivals you could submit to. But here’s what makes Breck worth your time and entry fee.
The Setting Is Worth It
The Breckenridge Film Festival takes place every September in the heart of the Colorado Rockies — 9,600 feet above sea level, during peak fall foliage.
You’ll struggle to find a better atmosphere and vibe for a film festival. This time of year, Breck is full of energy, with plenty to do and see in between screenings.
Breck’s Reputation is Growing
This year marks the 46th annual festival — 46 years of bringing independent film to the high country.
The Breck Film Festival has been recognized by USA Today as one of the top 20 film festivals in the nation. It’s consistently rated among FilmFreeway’s top 100, and draws industry guests from organizations including Pixar, Disney, and ReFramed Pictures.
When your film screens here, it screens in good company.
The Filmmaker Experience is Second to None
At Breck Film, we believe in supporting the filmmakers as much as the films. Past submitters say the same thing over and over: this festival actually cares about the people making the films, not just filling seats. Filmmaker Q&As are a cornerstone of the programming. The staff is communicative, hospitable, and genuinely engaged with the work.
That’s the high country film experience we’ve been building for 46 years — and it’s exactly what’s waiting for you in September 2026.
Ready to Submit Your Film?
